Local-First Data Storage

1. Introduction

Welcome to ClearBalance ("we", "our", or "us"). ClearBalance is a personal financial tracking application designed to help users track transactions, balance account ledgers, and manage budgets ("Service").

We take your privacy extremely seriously. ClearBalance is designed primarily as a local-first application. This means your financial data (including transactions, balances, descriptions, and account information) is saved directly on your device rather than on our servers. We do not sell, rent, or lease your personal financial records to any third parties.

Please read this Privacy Policy carefully to understand our practices regarding your data and how we handle it.

Quick Summary

Your transaction details, accounts, and budgets are stored locally on your device. We do not have access to your bank details or transaction logs. Third-party SDKs (such as AdMob for advertising and Google Sign-In for profile synchronization) may collect details as outlined in Section 3.

2. Data We Process

To provide a functional and secure finance management experience, ClearBalance processes the following types of information:

A. Local Financial & Transaction Data (Stays on Device)

All input relating to your financial life is recorded inside a local database (SQLite using Drift) on your device. This includes:

  • Transaction amounts, dates, and category tags.
  • Account ledger names, types (e.g., cash, bank account, card), and balances.
  • Budgets, savings goals, and currency preferences.
  • Personal notes or descriptions attached to transactions.

Transmission: This data remains entirely on your device. We do not run servers that collect, store, or monitor your personal financial data.

B. Camera and Media Access

If you choose to attach images of receipts or set a profile picture, ClearBalance will request access to your device's Camera and Photo Gallery. Images picked are copied to the application's local directory and are not uploaded to our servers.

C. Biometric and Authentication Data

You may enable fingerprint or face-unlock to restrict access to ClearBalance on your device. Biometric data is handled entirely by your device’s operating system local authentication APIs. ClearBalance receives only a confirmation (success or failure) of the authentication check and never has access to your biometric prints or facial records.

D. Sign-In Information

If you choose to sign in using Google Sign-In, we receive basic profile info provided by Google:

  • Your Name
  • Email address
  • Profile picture URL
  • A unique account identifier

This information is used to personalize your profile in the app and facilitate any cloud-sync feature you explicitly trigger.

3. Third-Party Services

ClearBalance integrates third-party Software Development Kits (SDKs) to support advertising, authentication, and platform features. These third parties may collect and process information as described below:

Google Mobile Ads (AdMob)
Advertising & Monetisation

AdMob serves advertisements in the free version of ClearBalance. It may collect and process identifiers to serve personalized or non-personalized ads.

Data Processed: IP Address, advertising IDs (e.g., Google AAID, Apple IDFA), device info (model, OS version), and location data (approximate location for targeting).

Google Ad Policies

Google Sign-In SDK
Authentication & Sync

Allows you to sign into your account easily. Google manages authentication tokens securely.

Data Processed: Authentication credentials, profile name, profile image URL, email address, and unique user tokens.

Google Privacy Policy

4. Data Security

We are dedicated to safeguarding your financial details. We employ a multi-layered security strategy to keep your data private:

  • Local Encryption: Secure credentials, preferences, and authentication tokens are kept in encrypted secure storage (using the flutter_secure_storage library which utilizes Android Keystore and iOS Keychain).
  • On-Device SQLite: Financial databases are kept strictly in the private app sandbox directories, making them inaccessible to other apps installed on the system under normal operating system sandbox constraints.
  • No Server Database: Because we do not upload your financial transaction histories to a centralized cloud server, your data cannot be exposed in a central server breach.

Please note, you are responsible for maintaining the physical security of your device and keeping your device password/PIN code secure.

5. Data Retention & Deletion

Because your transaction records are stored entirely on your device, we retain your data as long as ClearBalance is installed on your device.

How to Delete Your Data:

  • Local Data: To delete all transaction history, budgets, and categories, you can clear the app's storage settings in your OS Application Settings or uninstall ClearBalance. This instantly and permanently deletes your local database.
  • Sign-In / Sync Account: If you signed in using Google Sign-In and wish to request deletion of any associated account records from our synchronization systems, you can request account deletion directly from the App Settings or email us at privacy@clearbalance.app. We will process your request within 30 days.

6. Your Rights & Choices

Depending on your region, you may have statutory rights under regional data privacy regulations (such as GDPR in Europe or CCPA in California). Because of our local-first implementation, you can exercise most rights directly:

  • Right to Access & Portability: You can view all your transaction lists inside the app and export them as PDF reports or Excel sheets for your records.
  • Right to Rectification: You can edit or correct any transaction, account balance, or category name directly in the application's interface at any time.
  • Right to Restrict or Object: You can withdraw permissions (such as camera access or location targeting) inside your device settings.
  • Right to Opt-Out of Personalized Ads: You can limit personalized ad tracking through your device’s Google Play Services settings or Apple iOS settings by turning off "Personalized Ads".

7. Children's Privacy

Our Service is not intended for use by individuals under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect or solicit personal information from children under 13. If we discover that a child under 13 has provided us with personal details (such as through Google Sign-In), we will take immediate steps to delete this information from our sync systems. If you are a parent or guardian and realize your child has submitted details, please contact us immediately.

8. Policy Updates

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our app's features, third-party libraries, or legal requirements. When we update the policy, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page.

We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically to stay informed about how we protect your information. Your continued use of the Service after changes are published constitutes acceptance of those changes.
